Herniated or Slipped Disk
A disk herniation or "slipped disk" occurs when too much force is loaded on the spine. The spine by definition is composed of 7 cervical vertebrae (neck bones), 12 thoracic vertebrae (upper and mid backbones), and 5 lumbar vertebrae (low backbones). Each vertebra is separated by a disk which is a soft pliable substance. There are many possible causes of disc injuries. Disc injuries can range in severity from mild to severe and are most accurately diagnosed by an MRI. Disc injuries can cause pain, muscle tightness, inflammation, numbness, tingling, weakness, spinal cord or nerve root compression, and in severe circumstances incontinence and loss of sexual performance and gratification.
Chiropractic care is very helpful for herniated or slipped disks. Your chiropractor will take a full history and give a thorough examination of your herniated or slipped disk and other injuries and complaints. He will develop an appropriate course of treatment including chiropractic care, diagnostic imaging, and referrals to other medical professionals as needed.
